Objectives of CHDEC

The Counselling and Human Development Centre serves as an academic, career, and mental health development hub dedicated to preparing graduate students for professional counselling practice. The Centre provides students with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, supervised practical experience, and professional competencies necessary to serve effectively in diverse counselling settings. The objectives of CHDEC are to:
1. Provide rigorous academic instruction and professional training in counselling psychology and related areas of specialization.
2. Equip graduate students with practical counselling skills and supervised field experiences that prepare them for competent professional practice.
3. Develop students’ capacity to apply counselling theories, assessment skills, ethical principles, research knowledge, and evidence-based interventions in diverse settings.
4. Prepare students to respond to the psychological, social, educational, career, family, and mental health needs of individuals, schools, families, organizations, and communities.
5. Promote ethical practice, cultural responsiveness, professional integrity, and lifelong learning among counselling psychology professionals.
6. Support specialized training in areas such as school counselling, clinical and mental health counselling, marital, couple and family counselling, child and adolescent counselling, addiction and rehabilitation counselling, gerontological and grief counselling, trauma and crisis management counselling, and other areas relevant to contemporary counselling practice.
7. Strengthen the professional identity and competence of graduates so they can contribute meaningfully to the evolving counselling field in Nigeria, Africa, and beyond.
